It's Christmas time and what better activity is there than making a gingerbread house with others.
Gingerbread House
Difficulty :- Intermediate
Total Time :- 40 minutes
Makes :- 1 House
Ingredients
- Plain Flour ~ 900g
- Ground Ginger ~ 3 Tbsp
- Bicarbonate of Soda ~ 1Tbsp
- Butter ~ 375g
- Dark Muscovado sugar ~ 300g
- Golden Syrup ~ 150g
- Icing Sugar ~ 500g
- Egg whites ~ 3
Method
- 1. Pour your flour, ginger & bicarbonate of soda in a large mixing bowl and mix until incorporated. Make a well in the center and prepare the caramel.
- 2. Into a saucepan add your butter, sugar and golden syrup and constantly stir over a low heat until you have a dark brown caramel.
- 3. Pour your caramel a little at a time into the flour well and mix the flour until the mix begins to form a dough.
- 4. Once cool to the touch use your hands to knead the dough.
- 5. Place the dough on a counter-top and double check for any bits of flour you may have missed.
- 6. Wrap with cling film and chill until needed.
- 7. Roll out your dough to 1/3 cm thickness and cut either with metal cutters or by downloading a template of the internet and sticking the paper to some card to make a stencil.
- 8. Place on some baking paper / silicone mat and bake in the oven for 7 minutes at 200C(390F)
- 9. Decorate with your favourite icing recipe and sweets to really make the house your own.
